Full-time four-wheel drive is optional on the Ram 1500. Full-time four-wheel drive gives added traction for safety in all conditions, not just off-road, like the only system available on the Tundra.

The Ram 1500 has a standard blind spot warning system that uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. A system to reveal vehicles in the Tundra’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Ram 1500 has standard Rear Cross Path Detection, helping the driver avoid collisions. Toyota charges extra for Rear Cross Traffic Alert on the Tundra and its not available on the SR.

The Ram 1500 (except Tradesman/Express/Warlock)’s optional driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Tundra doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Ram 1500 and the Tundra have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras and available around view monitors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH, results indicate that the Ram 1500 is safer than the Toyota Tundra:

Ram’s powertrain warranty covers the 1500 5 years and 40,000 miles longer than Toyota covers the Tundra. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Tundra ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

There are almost 2 times as many Ram dealers as there are Toyota dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the 1500’s warranty.

The Ram 1500 has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Tundra doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

For better traction, the Ram 1500 has larger standard tires than the Tundra (275/65R18 vs. 245/75R18).

The Ram 1500’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 65 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Tundra SR’s standard 75 series tires. The Ram 1500’s optional tires have a lower 45 series profile than the Tundra Capstone’s 50 series tires.

The Ram 1500 has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Tundra doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The Ram 1500 has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the Ram 1500 flat and controlled during cornering. The Tundra’s suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

The Ram 1500 5.5-foot Box Laramie 4x4 handles at .76 G’s, while the Tundra 5.5-foot bed TRD Pro Crew Cab Pickup pulls only .69 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Ram 1500 Tungsten executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.6 seconds quicker than the Tundra 5.5-foot bed TRD Pro Crew Cab Pickup (27.5 seconds @ .64 average G’s vs. 29.1 seconds @ .57 average G’s).

The Ram 1500 stands out above the Toyota Tundra by offering not one, but two Qi-compatible phone chargers. This convenience helps travelers with multiple devices to keep powered up on-the-go. Wireless charging eliminates lost or cluttered charging cables and two of them provide more flexibility. Both vehicles also offer Qi charging for the rear passengers.

The Ram 1500’s optional Autonomous Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling the transmission and speed with the brake pedal. With its available fully controlled system, the driver just activates it and it parks autonomously, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The Tundra doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
